Agility Tips

Hi All,

As many of you know, I spent last Friday to Sunday with Sam-WOW! at a workshop with Susan Salo. This is the 3rd workshop we've done with her and I can't express the importance of teaching your dogs good jumping skills. Susan Salo's workshops focus on building great jumping skills for your dogs and the focus is also based on building confidence with speed. If you would like more information on Susan Salo, you can check out her website at: http://www.jumpdogs.com.

Sam-WOW! was brilliant all weekend and showed lots of improvement from the last seminar (actually, all the dogs showed lots of improvement from the last workshop). I'm looking forward to teaching the exercises from the workshops to all our students. Lisa has taken a couple of Susan's workshops with Marshall and she'll be passing on the importance of jumping to the foundation classes as well. Too many trainers forego their dog's jump education and I feel it is a real shame that lots of people do this or are unaware of the importance of the dog's jump education. I know that sometimes the jump work can be "tedious" & sometimes "boring" work but it is essential work that can only benefit profoundly in your dog's agility tool belt. Sometimes, as handlers we don't see the results immediately but over time, your dog will gain confidence and speed over jumps because it will become confident enough to perform those jumps properly with a good skill set.

At this seminar, Susan spoke to us about being a "team" and working in unison with our dogs. Because I've been a instructor for a really long time, I learned a long time ago from a brilliant trainer (Wendy Volhard) that students learn in either an audio way or in a visual way. I'm going to write out some points for reference for those students who need the visual so that hopefully, we can all work towards being a better team with our dogs. If it's in writing, it's been said by both me and Lisa to our students and if you didn't "hear" us, then maybe having just these small tips written out will help those of you who need it in writing as well.

Remember......

What to Expect at an Agility Fun Match

You've trained for months, maybe longer. You've learned the obstacles and how to handle them. You are ready for the next step . . .

Your First Agility Fun Match

A fun match is different from your weekly classes. It's fun and it's exciting. It's a great stress free way to learn what happens at a sanctioned trial.

Follow these tips and have a successful fun match experience. Prepare for the match by ensuring you have items you'll need for you and your dog. Review the following lists and pack the items that are appropriate for the venue.

Hi All,

  1. I wanted to let everyone know that one of our students (Laura) has a company which makes wonderful collars and leashes (slip collars & leashes) that work well for agility and every day living. There are some beautiful collars and leashes and I encourage you to have a look at her products on her website. She has kindly given me some samples and I will have them at class this week.

    Her website is: www.4onthefloordogwear.com

  2. Because we have a few new students and as well, because we have quite a few students who are considering trialing with their dogs, below is a list of websites including Agility Associations you may want to consider competing under and Agility Magazines you may want to subscribe to.
    www.aac.ca
    www.usdaa.com
    www.nadac.com
    www.ckc.ca
    www.akc.org
    www.cleanrun.com

  3. For those of you who are new students, I will let you know that there is an agility trial this coming weekend (Oct. 31, Nov. 1 & 2) at the Cloverdale Agriplex (176th & 66th – big red building). You are welcome to come and watch so that you can get a good understanding of what goes on at a competition. From what I understand from the organizers, it is a big event with lots of dogs entered.

  4. I would like to ask you all to please start looking through any special pictures you have of you with your dog(s). If there is a particular picture you like and would like to send to me, I would like to start gathering pictures of our students and their dogs to post on our website. So start looking for a good picture otherwise we’re going to have to start snapping pictures! J

  5. I’m also taking this opportunity to direct you to our website’s calendar – www.allstaragility.ca. We have started posting class start and end dates and we will be posting any events lstar will be hosting. For information on trials, we have opted to direct you to whichever Association’s website you may be trialing under as there are so many trials running.

  6. Some of you may or may not know that my dog, Lewis, has been featured in a short story about his life. The book has now been printed and is for sale at your local bookstores. I’m very proud of my little guy and if you read the story, I hope you enjoy it. The book is called “More Great Dog Stories, Inspirational Tales About Exceptional Dogs” and is written by Roxanne Willems Snopek. If you can’t find it at your local bookstores, let me know and I could probably get a few ordered. Oh yeah…. and Lewis said he’d even sign one for you!

  7. Lastly, we started our last full 6-week session last week. If payment wasn’t made last week, please make payment in cash this week.

  8. That’s all for now, See you in class!
